A Samsung executive last month ran off at the mouth, revealing that Samsung's PortalPlayer would drive the next-gen iPod Nano. Samsung was thought by market analysts to be a good bet to get the Apple contract, particularly given that SigmaTel has been on a rocky financial road, but the iPod MP3 processor contract will yield significant revenues for the company.
“It is not surprising that Apple would ‘punish’ Samsung for commenting publicly about its position within the iPod Nano follow-on, and we believe that SigmaTel is likely to be the resulting beneficiary of the Samsung executive’s gaffe," Morgan Securities' Craig Berger is quoted as saying the article.
The San Jose-based SigmaTel has found it hard going against Chinese and South Korean semiconductor makers. Apple's cash injection still might not be enough, is the Forbes summary of its financials.

The prototype display has a massive 82” size and features a resolution of 3820x2160 pixels, which results in a total screen resolution of 8.3 megapixels. Current 1080p TVs run at 1920x1080 pixels or 2.1 megapixels. According to the manufacturer, the TV integrates a red/green/blue LED backlight, which raises the color saturation to 150%. The image refresh rate is 120 Hz.

What makes this screen especially interesting is the fact that Sang Soo Kim, executive vice president of the LCD Technology Center at Samsung Electronics, called it the “optimal display for future TVs.” Quad HDTVs have been available before, but were exclusively marketed to markets that have a need for high resolution image display – such as the oil and gas industries. For example, Westinghouse has been offering 2160p TVs with sizes up to 52”.

The Westinghouse Quad HDTV is not sold on the open market, but our sources say that you won’t be able to buy one for less than $40,000 at this time. So we don’t even ask how much that 82” 2160p TV could cost and wait until we win the lottery first.

Samsung Electronics has started mass production of 256G-byte solid-state drives, which could make their way into laptops in a few months, the company announced Thursday.

Solid-state drives, or SSDs, store data on flash memory chips and are often compared to hard drives, which store data on magnetic platters. SSDs consume less power and have no moving parts, making them less vulnerable to failure compared to hard drives. Growing adoption has erased initial concerns about SSD durability, but it has a lesser storage capacity and remains more expensive than hard drives.
The 256G-byte SSD is the highest-capacity to date for the consumer electronics market so this announcement is big for laptop users, said Gregory Wong, president of analyst firm Forward Insights. Most laptops today that have SSDs have 128G-byte drives.
The new SSD is available now, a Samsung spokeswoman said. She could not provide pricing information.
It could be about two months until the new SSDs are in laptops, Wong said. Companies that use Samsung SSDs include Apple and Dell.

That long-dreamed-of product, the solid-state laptop, is one step closer to reality, as Samsung is showing off a flash-powered laptop at CeBIT. The demo box uses a 32GB 1.8-inch solid-state drive created by Samsung, to show off the company's flash chops. Unfortunately, at $30 per gigabyte, the 32GB drive would cost over $900. However, with flash prices continuing to decline, and companies like Intel predicting that flash laptops are on their way, we may not have to wait too much longer for this to be feasible -- though, even at over $900, that flash laptop drive sounds mighty tempting.
